Hurricane Season

Living in the South, We all know the “Blue Tarp” look- Will your house or business fall victim to this?

Now- with no storm brewing, it is the best time to make sure your roof is prepared for the most extreme winds a Hurricane can bring. Which could be 155MPH or higher.

Metal Roofs are considered to be the most resistant roofing material to hail, wind, and fire.

Metal Roofs offer the highest warranty (40 years and up) but are also the most expensive.  However, since their life is longer and they can withstand more of nature’s effects, they may actually end up more cost-efficient in the long run.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Below are two pictures, both taken in Punta Gorda, FL. The most surprising thing, the pictures are taken only 200 yards away from one another.

( Sallie Jones Elementary School)
Due to the way metal roofing panels are constructed and installed, metal roofs have extremely high resistance to wind damage, such as Hurricanes. Unlike roofing Shingles (bottom left), Vertical Seam Metal Roofs are installed with a continuous piece that extends the entire way from the eave (lowest part of the roof) to the ridge (highest part of the roof). Making it more difficult for wind to get under the panels. Versus the Shingles, that are attached individually and stacked over one another.

Metal Shingles

Today there are more metal roofing materials, styles, colors, and manufactures to choose from than ever before. Metal shingles typically are intended to simulate traditional roof coverings, such as wood shakes, shingles, and tile. Apart from metal roofing's longevity, metal shingles are relatively light weight, have a greater resistance to adverse weather and can be aesthetically pleasing. Some popular examples of shingles include ,the wood shake style, clay tile style, shingles/slate style and the standing seam style.

The wood shake offers the popular wood style without the problems of ongoing maintenance and eventual tear off and replacement.

The clay style provides the unique look of clay along with proven benefits and durability of metal roofing.

Shingles and Slate style provide the architectural modern benefits of shingles/slate but with the long lasting beauty and efficiency unmatched by fiberglass shingles.

A few fun facts about METAL ROOFING .

Aluminum is one of the best metals to use for roofs located in the coastal areas, where there is a heavy presence of salt spray in the environment.

1.Unlike many other roofing materials, a metal roof can easily be installed in the winter.

2. Modern metal roofs come in well over 100 colors, which include standard, premium and custom made options. The number of color options for metal roofing is a lot greater than the options you get with asphalt shingles roofs (only about 15-20 standard colors).

3.Metal roofs last for at least 50 years, with many lasting well over 100. This means that a typical metal roof lasts about 3-7 times longer than a typical asphalt shingles roof, which usually needs to replaced every 12-17 years.

4. Metal roofs will protect your house against hurricane level winds. Many have a wind resistance ratings of 110-160 mph.

5. Metal roofs will not rot, split, crack, dry-out, chip, warp, leak, unlike all other common roofing materials.

6.Generally metal roofs require none or minimal maintenance.

7.A metal roof has a cool reflective surface, which reflects solar heat back into the atmosphere, rather than absorbing it inside a home or a building.

8. Metal roofing is the only TRULY green material in the roofing industry, because it uses the least amount of resources during the manufacturing process, contains no petroleum by-products, and can always be recycled.New metal roofs may contain anywhere from 30-60% of recycled metal content, and are 100% recyclable at the end of their service lives.
Old metal roofs will never end up in our landfills at the end of their service lives, thus saving the ever-precious landfill space and helping protect the environment.A metal roof (or any metal for that matter) can be recycled an unlimited number of times without suffering material degradation.

 9. A metal roof will not increase the likelihood of your home getting struck by a lightning.
If a lightning does strike your home, a metal roof will safely dissipate the electric charge even if it is not grounded.
